Harper, Tigers off to good start

Elkins junior Cory Harper is averaging 22.7 points per game through six games this season. The Tigers host Lincoln at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday for a Big 10 Conference contest.
ELKINS -- Elkins High School's Cory Harper had a busy offseason on the basketball court and it's paying off this season.
In leading the Tigers to a 5-1 record, the junior is averaging 22.7 points.
In Elkins' most recent game, Harper was a perfect 5-of-5 from 3-point land en route to a 30-point performance in a 66-63 victory over Class AAA, No. 10 Wyoming East in the consolation game of the Little General Battle for the Armory.
"Cory is playing with a lot of confidence right now," Tigers coach Amrit Rayfield said. "We ran a lot of stuff for him (against Wyoming East) and he made some big shots."
Harper's trey with 54 seconds left gave Elkins the lead for good.
During the offseason, Harper participated in Stephen Curry's "Underrated Tour" East Regional event held in Washington, D.C.
He was just one of 75 players chosen to participate in the Washington Tour stop.
The Underrated Tour focuses on players not 4- or 5-star recruits
Harper's performance at the East Regional led to him being invited to attend the Underrated Championships to be held in Oakland, California, in April.
"He's very coachable, hard working and an extremely humble young man, so this honor truly couldn't have happened to a more deserving student-athlete," Rayfield said.
The Tigers are set to return to action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at home against Lincoln.
