WILLIAMSTOWN — The Elkins High School wrestling team returned from a four-week layoff to finish 13th out of 24 teams at Saturday’s Bob Zide Rumble.
Sophomore Gavin Boland placed first in the 106-pound division to lead the Tigers. Boland earned pin falls against University’s Herschel Heiskell in the first round and Tyler Consolidated’s Danny McCune in the quarterfinals.
Boland, third in the Coaches Association/wvmat.com rankings, earned a major decision (9-0) victory over Williamstown’s Ashton Wasmer in the title match.
Teammate Javier Rosario placed fourth at 160, overcoming a first-round loss to Wirt County’s Channing Lowe. The junior earned two straight pin fall wins before falling to Lowe in the third-place match.
In the 195-pound class, senior Nick Barrickman, sixth in the rankings, went 4-1 but due to WVSSAC regulations he was not allowed to compete in the third-place match. A wrestler is not permitted to participate in more than five bouts in one day.
Winfield’s Evan Fuellhart was also in the same situation, creating a double-forfeit in the battle for third place.
Austin Lanham also turned in a sixth-place effort in the 220-pound class.
Elkins tallied 66 points on the day. Braxton County won team honors with 202 points.
The Tigers will host a quad-match at 5 p.m. today and remain home on Saturday for a tourney.
