Tigers climb to fifth in AP poll

With girls sectional play nearing, area teams stay course in polls

ELKINS -- With the start of sectional play less than three weeks away, area teams continue to stay the course in The Associated Press polls.

Surging Elkins, winners of four straight games, moved up a spot to fifth in the this week's boys poll released on Monday.

The Tigers (10-3) return to the court this evening at Hampshire.

Meanwhile, Tygarts Valley, Tucker County and Pendleton all remained in the Class A poll.

The Bulldogs (8-3) and Mountain Lions (11-2) are fifth and seventh, respectively, and the Wildcats (8-2) fell from ninth to 10th.

The Buckhannon-Upshur girls, who have captured four consecutive contests to improve to 12-3, are still eighth in Class AAAA.

Tucker County (11-4) also remained fourth in single-A and Pendleton County moved from receiving votes to ranked 10th in this week's poll.

Girls sectional tournament action is set to begin on Feb. 18 and the boys a week later.
