MILL CREEK -- Midland Elementary's fourth- and fifth-grade basketball teams each won their respective Cheat Mountain Conference Tournaments recently at Tygarts Valley High School.
The Mustangs' fourth-grade team, which finished the season 14-5, was the No. 4 seed and defeated No. 2 seed George Ward Red, 21-10, in the Championship game.
Trailing 8-4 at the half, Midland outscored George Ward, 17-2, in the second half to take the victory.
"I'm so proud of the kids for keeping their composure when we struggled to score in the first half," Midland coach Steve Belan said. "We couldn't get anything to fall in the first half, and credit to George Ward for that. But our first-half defense kept us in the game and our defensive effort in the second half was phenomenal.
"The kids were very coachable, did everything we asked them to do and steadily improved throughout the season."
The Mustangs' fifth-grade team won the regular season and was the top seed in the tournament.
Midland defeated second-seed Third Ward Elementary by a score of 25-22 in the championship game.
"I truly couldn't have asked for a better coaching staff and group of kids to coach," said Midland coach Dalton Hamrick. "Each kid gave it their all every practice and game, which is all I could ask for. Seeing the growth and development of each individual from the beginning of the season to the end is a reward in itself.
"To top off the season with winning the championship was the icing on the cake."
Midland finished with a 17-2 record.
