Tucker gets by Bulldogs to win title

Pendleton trips East Hardy, will face Mountain Lions in state tourney

HAMBLETON -- A third-quarter surge pushed Tucker County to a 58-43 win over Tygarts Valley Wednesday night in Class A, Region II co-final action.

The Mountain Lions (23-2) advance to the state tournament as the third seed and will face PVC rival and sixth-seed Pendleton County at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in quarterfinal action at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.

The Bulldogs, who led by as many as seven points in the first half, took a 23-22 lead into the intermission before Tucker County went on 6-0 run to start the second half and never trailed again.

A basket by Ethan McGee brought Tygarts Valley to within 29-25 but the Bulldogs came no closer, as the Mountain Lions closed the quarter on a 15-6 run to lead 44-31 entering the final quarter.

Freshman Kaden Moore's basket cut the Bulldog deficit to 50-40. However, Haden Wamsley hit a 3-pointer and scored inside to put Tucker County in control.

Wamsley hit five treys on the night in netting a game-high 19 points. Ashton Lycliter followed with 17 and Levi Bennett 10.

Ezra Scott and Garrett Gibson each had 13 points for Tygarts Valley. Gibson also had six rebounds and three assists, Moore nine points and five rebounds and Dalton Goode five caroms and three steals

The Bulldogs, who lose Gibson, Goode and Riley Tackett to graduation, finished the season 14-9.

FRANKLIN -- Pendleton County placed three players in double figures in cruising past East Hardy, 74-41, in Class A, Region II co-final play on Wednesday evening.

Tanner Townsend had 14 and Braden McClanahan and Clayton Kisamore 13 each for the Wildcats (19-3), who will face third-seed Tucker County at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in state tournament quarterfinal action in Charleston.

Dawson Price led the Cougars with 19 points.
