In battle of Tigers, Raleigh County squad notches 17-4 win

ELKINS -- Shady Spring claimed a 17-4 win over Elkins Thursday night at EHS Field.
In a battle of Tigers, the visitors from Raleigh County scored seven runs over the first three innings to build a 7-2 cushion.
Elkins had erased a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of runs.
Jaxon Drennen had a lead-off single and Cameron Biller followed with a double to center.
Gavin Carr then plated Drennen with a groundout to second and one out later, Cole Shreve delivered a double to left to score Biller to make it 2-1.
But Shady Spring answered in the top of the second with four runs, highlighted by Josh Lovell's bases-clearing double to garner a 5-2 lead.
A run-producing single by Walker Bowman and an RBI sacrifice fly by Alex Johnston extended the advantage to 7-2 in the third.
In the fourth, Shady Spring picked up four runs when Evan Belcher singled in Adam Richmond, two runs crossed on a throwing error and another on a wild pitch.
The visitors tacked on six additional runs over the final two innings, while Elkins tacked on a pair.
Ethan Humphrey took the loss in working the first 1 2/3 innings. He allowed five runs on one hit, striking out one and walking four.
David Young earned the victory in going the first 3 2/3 frames, surrendering two runs on six hits and fanning a pair.
Elkins (5-11) will resume Big 10 Conference action at 6 p.m. today at Robert C. Byrd.
Shady Spring, which defeated Tygarts Valley on Wednesday, improved to 12-3 and continues its spring trip through the area today by visiting Buckhannon-Upshur at 5 p.m.
