Lady Colts capture regional track title
Lady Tigers qualify all five relay teams for next week’s state meet

WESTON -- The Philip Barbour girls captured the Class AA, Region II title and Elkins qualified several athletes for the state meet Wednesday at Lewis County High School.
The Lady Colts tallied 132 points to outdistance Liberty's 86 points.
The Lady Tigers were third with 77 points, followed by Robert C. Byrd (62), Braxton County (61), Lewis County (56), Lincoln (39), Roane County (23) and Clay County (21).
Taking regional titles in individual events for Philip Barbour were junior Emily Denison in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:00.45, senior Audrey Williams in the 3,200 (12:44.96), senior Callee Collins in the 100 hurdles (17.11) and senior Lydia Phillips in the 300 hurdles (51.01).
Denison was second in the 100 (13.12), freshman Lilly Miller third in the 800 (2:44.18) and senior Cadie Kittle third in the discus (84-04).
Earning an at-large state berth was junior Megan Mitchell in the 3,200 (13:10.23)
The Lady Colts qualified all five of their relay teams.
The 4×100 unit of Phillips, Collins, senior Desiree Knotts and Denison captured first with a time of 52.50, while the shuttle hurdle team of senior Garyona Riffle, sophomore Preslea Miller, Collins and Phillips took the title with an effort of 1:10.80.
Placing second were the 4×200 (Preslea Miller, freshman Riley McCartney, Collins and Knotts) in 1:55.78 and the 4×400 (Knotts, McCartney, Williams and Denison) in a time of 4:18.68.
McCartney, Lilly Miller, Mitchell and Williams qualified in the 4×800 with a third-place showing in 11:13.83.
Elkins also qualified all five of its relay units for the state meet, taking regional titles in three events.
The 4×200 (senior Anna Belan, sophomore Gracelin Corley, sophomore Laney Fletcher and senior Kaleigh Edwards) and the 4×400 (junior Kiley Edwards, Belan, Fletcher and Corley) placed first in times of 1:51.87 and 4:15.72, respectively, while the 4×800 (Kiley Edwards, sophomore Katie Collins, Belan and junior Samantha Sproul) took top honors with an effort of 10:38.12.
The 4×100 (Belan, Corley, Fletcher and Kaleigh Edwards) was second in 52.64 and the shuttle hurdle unit of freshman Hazel Jackson, junior Zayah Hedrick, sophomore Emma Morgan and junior Alyson Evick placed third in a time of 1:18.09.
Individual state qualifiers for the Lady Tigers were Sproul, who was second in the 800 in a time of 2:40.57, Corley in the 400 (third, 1:03.38), Fletcher in the 400 (at-large berth time of 1:03.76) and Jackson in the 100 hurdles (third, 17.94).
The Class AA portion of the state meet takes place Wednesday evening and Thursday at University of Charleston Stadium at Laidley Field.
