Seneca Soccer teams win Cup titles

BARBURSVILLE -- The Seneca Soccer U12 Boys and U12 Girls each won their respective rec divisions in the West Virginia Soccer Association Open Cup held last weekend at the Barboursville Soccer Complex.
The Seneca Boys team defeated Great Teays Soccer Club (Teays Valley), 3-1, in a thrilling championship match that was tied 1-1 at halftime.
The boys, coached by Steve Belan and assistant Craig Fortney, allowed only one goal the entire tournament while scoring 10.
"I'm so proud of the boys," Belan said. "They have worked really hard all season and played great soccer this weekend. They deserved this championship. To allow only one goal for the tournament, against strong teams from Charleston and Teays Valley, says a lot about this team. They carried out our game plans beautifully in each game and played so well as a team all weekend long. They are a very coachable, unselfish and gritty group of kids and I couldn't be happier for them.
"Our boys and girls both showed a lot of class, set a great example of how to handle themselves, and showed great support for each other. It was a great day for Seneca Soccer."
The Seneca girls outscored their opponents 21-1, including a resounding 4-0 defeat of West Charleston in the championship match on Sunday.
The girls are coached by Travis Fletcher and assisted by Garrett Chenoweth.
"The girls played great team soccer this weekend and showed what can be done when they work hard and play for each other," Fletcher said. "This was such a rewarding experience for them and the end result was a well-deserved championship. Our girls really cheered on the boys during their championship match and the boys returned the favor for the girls final. It was great to see them screaming and cheering in support of each other."
