Smoak paces Tigers with pair of top-six state finishes

CHARLESTON -- Charlie Smoak ended his running career at Elkins High School with a pair of top-six finishes in the Class AA state track and field championships which concluded on Thursday.
Smoak, who has signed to participate track, cross country and triathlon at Wingate University (N.C.) was fifth in Wednesday night's 3,200 (9:42.49) and sixth in the 1,600 (4:24.95) race on Thursday.
Elkins finished with three points to place 18th, while Philip Barbour was 19th with two points.
Winfield won the team title with 103 points, followed by Point Pleasant (95), Bluefield (56), Keyser (38) and Poca (34) to comprise the top five.
The Tigers placed eighth in the 4×800 (Luke Anger, Isaac Anger, Tyler McKisic and Smoak) in a time of 8:54.25.
Luke Anger was 11th in the 800 (2:07.43) and the 4×200 relay comprised of Isaiah Sigley, Zane George, Gavin Boland and Jayden Shreve) placed 12th with an effort of 1:37.58.
The Colts were paced by junior DeShawn Webster, who turned in a leap of 19-11.00 to finish fifth in the long jump.
Jacob Davies posted an eighth-place effort in the 400 (53.65).
He also joined Drew Morral, Matthew Croston and Grant Dadisman in placing 11th in the 4×400 relay (3:43.13.
Davies, Matthew Croston, Kevin Knotts and Brandan Carpenter finished 14th in the 4×100 relay in a time of 47.48.
