SHINNSTON -- Second-seed Lincoln used a 12-hit attack to eliminate No. 4 Elkins from the Class AA, Region II, Section 1 tournament with an 11-1 victory on Thursday night.
The Cougars held a 6-1 advantage before plating five runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the contest early due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Freshman Jaxon Drennen led off the game with a homer over the left-field fence but the Tigers were limited to just five hits the rest of the way by Levi Moore, who struck out five and walked one in going all five innings.
Drennen accounted for three of the hits.
Lincoln used an RBI single by Lance Hostuttler and a two-run homer by Jeremiah Carpenter in the home-half of the first to lead 3-1.
The Cougars tacked on a single run in second and two more in the fourth.
Johnny Lopez lofted an RBI sacrifice fly in the second and knocked in another run in the fourth on a triple.
Corbin Ayers had a two-run single and Lopez an RBI single in the fifth.
Gage Huffman took the loss in four innings of work, allowing 12 hits and fanning three.
The Cougars (13-12) will host third-seed Philip Barbour at 6 p.m. today in the loser's bracket finale.
The winner visits top-seed Robert C. Byrd on Saturday, needing two wins to capture the sectional crown.
Elkins ended the season 9-18.
