CHARLESTON -- The Elkins High School girls captured state titles in two relay events, while Philip Barbour tied for fifth in the team standings on the final day of the Class AA portion of the state track and field meet Thursday at UC Stadium at Laidley Field.
The Lady Tigers, who finished seventh with 28 points, won the 4×800 and the 4×400.
The 4×800 unit was comprised of Kiley Edwards, Katie Collins, Anna Belan and Samantha Sproul. They finished with a time of 8:54.25 to outdistance runner-up Liberty by more than six seconds.
Kiley Edwards, Belan and Sproul were members of last year's winning 4×800 unit.
Kiley Edwards and Belan joined Laney Fletcher and Gracelin Corley in running to first in the 4×400 with an effort of 4:11.25 to outdistance North Marion's time of 4:16.78.
It was personal bests for both state champion relay units, and the 4×400 missed setting a new school record by just two seconds.
Belan, Corley, Fletcher and Kaleigh Edwards teamed to place fourth in both the 4×100 (52.17) and 4×200 (1:49.91).
Hazel Jackson, Zayah Hedrick, Emma Morgan and Alyson Evick, meanwhile, finished 10th in the shuttle hurdle relays in a time of 1:16.03.
"I was so proud of our kids and their performances the last two days," EHS coach Shellie Burda said. "They fought for every second.
"While we didn't place in every event we entered, we had so many (personal records) and you can't ask more than that out of your athletes."
The Lady Colts racked up 33 points to tie fellow Big 10 Conference school Liberty.
Lydia Phillips placed second in the 300 hurdles (48.09) and Emily Denison was runner-up in Wednesday night's 400 (59.70) to pace Philip Barbour.
Denison was also sixth in the 100-meter dash (13.31), while Callee Collins was fourth in the 100 hurdles (16.75) and Aubrey Williams seventh in Wednesday evening's 3,200 (12:31.85).
The Lady Colt 4×100 relay comprised of Phillips, Collins, Desiree Knotts and Denison was second in a time of 51.75 and the 4×400 (Knotts, Riley McCartney, Williams and Denison) was fourth in a time of 4:18.86.
Winfield captured the team title with 145 points in outdistancing North Marion's 67.
Point Pleasant (62) was third and Fairmont Senior (52) fourth.
