Elkins 11-12-year-olds earn state berth

Belington/Tucker County squad falls one victory short of reaching 8-10-year-old tourney

SUTTON — The Elkins 11-12-year-old Little League All-Stars are headed to the state tournament after claiming an 11-5 win over Tygarts Valley Saturday at Holly-Gray Park.

Elkins advances to the state tournament as the District 8 runner-up.

Tygarts Valley had dropped to the loser’s bracket after falling, 6-5, to Summersville in Friday night’s winner’s bracket finale.

Play in the 14-team state tournament begins July 15 at Martinsburg’s Oatesdale Park.

Elkins faces District 1 runner-up Barboursville in its opening game at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 15, in Mountaineer bracket play.

District 8 champion Summersville will compete in the Herd bracket and battle the District 6 champion at 7:30 p.m. on July 15.

The champion and runner-up from both the Mountaineer Bracket and Herd Bracket move to the championship bracket set to get underway on July 19.

In 8-10-year-old District 8 action, the Belington/Tucker County squad fell one win away from moving to states, being edged, 5-4, by Braxton County in Saturday’s loser’s bracket finale.

Summersville captured the District 8 banner with a 14-2 win over Braxton County on Friday evening.
