Elkins High to host Class AA, Region II meet at D&E course

ELKINS -- The Class AA, Region II cross country championships take place today across the Davis & Elkins College course.
The girls race gets underway at 1 p.m. and the boys at 1:45 p.m.
Teams expected to compete include host Elkins, Lewis County, Liberty-Harrison, Lincoln, Robert C. Byrd, Braxton County and Roane County.
If six complete teams are fielded, the top three finishers will qualify for the state meet, while five or less will send two teams.
The top 10 individual finishers also earn state berths.
Among the favorites in the girls race for the team title are Braxton County, Liberty, RCB and Elkins.
Liberty's Destiny Berryman, RCB's Claudia More, Braxton's Addison Lloyd and Elkins' Samantha Sproul are the frontrunners for the individual title.
The boys race is wide open, with Lewis County and Elkins expected to challenge for the team title.
Lewis County's Slate Swiger, who captured last week's Big 10 Conference title, is the favorite to win the individual race.
Teammates David Hughes and Maddox Prince, along with Elkins' Tyler Burda, Gavin Brown and Preston Nixon are others to watch.
Buckhannon-Upshur, meanwhile, will compete in the Class AAA, Region 1 meet hosted by Brooke High School.
The Lady Bucs' Lydia Falkenstein, the Big 10 champion, is among the favorites for the individual title and looks to guide the squad to a state berth among a competitive field.
Jack Waggy and Jordan Gillum lead the B-U boys, who are coming off winning the Big 10 crown.
Philip Barbour travels to West Taylor Elementary School for the Class AA-A, Region 1 Championships.
The Lady Colts are anchored by Layna Grassi and Megan Mitchell, while Isaiah Starks leads the Philip Barbour boys.
The state meet will be held Oct. 29 at Cabell Midland High School in Ona.
