EHS girls, boys place second at Hampshire

ROMNEY -- Sammi Sproul blazed Hampshire High School's mud-splattered course in 22:25 to place second individually and lead the Elkins High School girls cross country team to a runner-up finish at the Paul Clovis Invitational on Saturday.
Delia White (6th, 23:45) and Raighan Hall-Carte (12th, 24:16) also earned medals by finishing among the Top 15.
Taylor Lanham (21st, 25:04) and Emma Gilbert (24th, 25:39) rounded out the top five scorers for the Lady Tigers, whose 65 points put them close behind Martinsburg's 61 for the team title.
Hedgesville's Allison Bray won the individual crown with a time of 21:46.
"The girls were more aggressive off of the starting line today and it helped us establish good positions early on," EHS coach Scott Biola said. "The next step for us is to get out hard and keep advancing throughout the back half of the race."
Other girls teams competing in the meet included Hampshire (80), Frankfort (120), Hedgesville (126), Somerset Area (Pa.) (135), Musselman (165), Spring Mills (187) and Washington (191).
Like the Lady Tigers, the Elkins boys also put three individuals in the Top 15 and took second overall as a team. Medal winners for the boys included Tyler Burda (8th, 19:37), Gavin Brown (11th, 19:47) and Preston Nixon (14th, 20:03).
Josh Bodkins (18th, 20:20) and Bobby Valentine (22nd, 20:35) also contributed to the Tigers' team total of 73 points. Elkins' 57-second spread amongst its five scorers was the tightest grouping in the nine-team meet.
"Despite the weather today, the boys had a great performance," coach Amanda Carter said. "Three boys in the Top 15 ... we will absolutely take that and continue to build momentum heading into the Big 10 Championships next week."
Washington's Noah Schappell captured the individual win in 18:21 and Frankfort's boys took the team trophy with 41 points.
Trailing Frankfort and Elkins in the team standings were Hedgesville (97), Hampshire (117), Musselman (122), Washington (145), Martinsburg (158), Spring Mills (199) and Somerset Area (217).
The EHS cross country teams will return to action on Oct. 13 in Kingwood for the Big 10 Conference Championships at Preston High School.
