MILL CREEK -- The injury big bit the Tygarts Valley football team in the opening game of the season when last year's leading rusher and all-state candidate Nate Hulver went down.
Throughout the season, the Bulldogs have navigated a tough schedule without several other key starters, and forced to put young and inexperienced players into the lineup.
One player that's stepped his level of play up is senior Wade Warner.
Warner, who also dealt with injuries as a junior, entered the season as a receiver but has taken a more active role as one of the team's primary ball-carriers, toting the ball 41 times.
Warner leads Tygarts Valley in several offensive categories, including receiving, total touchdowns and all-purpose yardage.
He has collected 21 receptions for 400 yards, scored four touchdowns and is averaging 73.1 yards per game in total yardage.
Defensively, Warner has a team-high 31 solo tackles, eight assists and two tackles for loss.
During the 2022 track season, Warner qualified the state track meet.
He placed eighth in the 110-meter hurdles and was a member of the shuttle hurdle relay team which finished sixth.
The Bulldogs (0-7) were off last Friday night. They lost a 40-0 verdict to Pendleton County on Oct. 13 in a Thursday night home contest during Mountain State Forest Festival week.
Tygarts Valley is scheduled to face Trinity in the home finale this Friday night at Bulldog Field.
The Warriors (5-3) are also dealing with low roster numbers this season, along with a mid-season coaching change.
Trinity dropped 44-31 to Clear Spring (Md.) in its last outing this past Friday evening.
In other action this Friday night, Elkins visits Frankfort, Buckhannon-Upshur entertains Grafton, Philip Barbour hosts Lewis County and Tucker County is at home against Gilmer County.
