ELKINS -- The Elkins High School boys basketball team entered the season with high expectations and for good reason.
The senior-oriented Tigers lost just one starter from last year's 21-4 squad.
Coach Amrit Rayfield's squad starts five seniors, including Cory Harper.
The 6-foot-4 Harper is averaging 19 points per game this year.
He averaged that total as a junior in earning Class AAA all-state second-team honors and all-Big 10 Conference first-team laurels.
Off to a 3-1 start for the 2022-23 campaign, Elkins notched a 54-46 win over Class A, No. 2 Tucker County at home on Saturday night as Harper tallied 19 points.
He's now among the top 25 all-time leading scorers at EHS with 817 points and continues his march to the 1,000-point mark for his career.
Harper had a busy offseason on the court as well as he continues to improve his play on the hardwood.
He was selected to take part in the Steph Curry Underrated Tour in Oakland, California, and also got to meet the Golden State Warrior star.
Elkins returns to action at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Musselman.
The Tigers will then travel to Salisbury, Maryland, over the Christmas break to play in the Governor's Challenge.
They will face Wicomico (Md.) at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 27, and Crisfield (Md.) at 6:45 p.m. on Dec. 28.
Rayfield played at Crisfield before his playing days at Davis & Elkins College.
