Lady Tigers take win over No. 6 ’Maids
Cogar nets 16 off the bench in 53-49 victory

ELKINS -- Elkins used a scrappy effort and Addy Cogar's career-high 16 points off the bench to hold off Class AAA, No. 6 Lewis County, 53-49, Wednesday night in Big 10 Conference action.
The Lady Tigers (8-7) led by as many as five points in the fourth quarter after the game was tied at 25-25 in a physical encounter.
Maddie Belan's basket treated Elkins to a 43-38 lead with just under 7 minutes left in regulation.
The Minutemaids rallied, however, with a 9-4 run to get even as Bryn Hunt's 3-pointer with 2:17 to play tied the contest at 47-47.
Hunt connected on six treys on the evening in finishing with a game-high 20 points.
Free throws and key rebounds off the misses from the charity strip down the stretch allowed the Lady Tigers to maintain the advantage.
Gracelin Corley's free throw then put Elkins in front 48-47. The junior guard later collected a rebound off a miss by Cogar at the foul line and hit both of her attempts after being fouled to push the cushion to three points.
Lewis County used a runner in the lane by freshman Payten Goodwin to draw to 50-49 with just :16 remaining. Goodwin had 14 points in the loss.
Autumn Lane added a free throw on the other end and her second attempt misfired. But Cogar retrieved the rebound and knocked down two from the free-throw stripe to make it a four-point game with just 11 ticks left.
The Minutemaids, who entered the game with a 12-1 record, scored the game's first eight points before the Lady Tigers turned up the pressure defense and were able to answer with a 12-4 run to tie the game after the first quarter.
Lewis County again gained some separation in the second frame, taking a 34-29 lead on Hunt's lay-in with 3:40 left until the half.
But a steal by Celia Ricottilli led to a layup by Laney Fletcher just before time expired in the first half as the game was again deadlocked at 25-25.
Elkins held a 16-13 scoring edge in the third to carry a 41-38 edge into the final frame.
Corley added 11 points and Ricottilli chipped in 10 for the Lady Tigers, who remain home Friday to battle Bridgeport.
The Minutemaids will host No. 4 East Fairmont on the same evening.
