D&E’s Mondragon, Rolle earn MEC laurels

BRIDGEPORT -- Davis & Elkins' first winning season in 42 years has resulted in MEC honors for head coach Daniel Mondragon and standout guard Sam Rolle V.

Mondragon was named the MEC Coach of the Year on Tuesday after leading the Senators to an 18-10 record and sixth seed in the league tourney, which is being held this week in Wheeling.

The 18 wins were the most for D&E since the 1954-55 campaign.

Rolle, a junior, was named to the MEC first team, while teammate Breland Walton was listed as honorable mention.

D&E faces third-seed the University of Charleston at 2:30 p.m. Friday in MEC quarterfinal play.

Alderson Broaddus' Jalen Knotts was named to the second team. The Battlers are seeded ninth in the tourney and face No. 8 Concord at 8:30 p.m. today in a first-round matchup.

West Liberty's Bryce Butler was selected as the league's Player of the Year for the second straight year.

Charleston's CJ Meredith was voted the MEC Freshman of the Year.
