B-U takes team titles in Capitol City Classic meet

CHARLESTON -- The Buckhannon-Upshur boys and girls swept the team titles in the Capitol City Classic held Friday at Laidley Field at University of Charleston Stadium.

The Bucs, who finished with 115.66 points to easily outdistance Riverside (65.33), were led by senior Taiwo Thropp, who captured the 100-meter dash (10.73), 200 (22.07) and 400 (49.84). He also joined Shawn Blandino, Jordan Gillum and Reis Leonard in taking the 4×400 relay in a time of 3:32.29.

Jack Waggy claimed the 3,200 in a time of 10:42.62

Placing second for B-U were Blandino in the 400 (51.25), Gillum in the 800 (2:04.48), the 4×100 relay (Bryson Johnston, Savion Farmer, Timothy Snyder and Blandino) in 44.86, the 4×200 (Johnston, Landon Marple, Snyder and Blandino) in 1:34.26 and the shuttle hurdle relay (Chase Hackett, Devin Phillips, Carter Zuliani and Zade Woody) in 1:05.25.

Elkins placed 10th with 23 points among the 18-team field.

Cabell Midland (56.33), Point Pleasant (55) and Ripley (38) rounded out the top five.

Josh Bodkins and Tyler Burda placed second and third, respectively, in the 3,200 in times of 11:00.80 and 11:01.80, while Caleb Ray was third in the 200 (23.71) and Gavin Brown fifth in the 1,600 in a time of 5:05.91.

The Lady Bucs compiled 130 points to outlast 14 other teams in the girls meet.

Elkins placed sixth with 42 points.

Ripley (84) was second, followed by Cabell Midland (69), George Washington (57) and Riverside (54) to comprise the top five.

Senior Dezi Pugh won the 200 (27.02), 400 (1:01.37) and 300 hurdles (49.17) and was runner-up in the 100 (13.07) to pace B-U.

Lydia Falkenstein won the 3,200 (11:42.70) and was second in the 1,600 (5:31.49).

Jessica Williams captured first in the high jump (5-0) and Chloe Cale took the long jump (16-05).

Cale was also second in the 100 hurdles (17.46).

Samantha Shreve was second in the 3,200 (11:54.47), the 4×800 of Williams, Falkenstein, Chloe Blonn and Shreve was second with an effort of 10:51.11 and Catherine Neely second in the discus (110-01).

The Lady Tigers ran to first in the 4×200 as Elizabeth Jones, Kiley Edwards, Laney Fletcher and Gracelin Corley turned in a time of 1:51.94.

Alyson Evick and Jaylen Tacy joined Jones and Fletcher in placing second in the 4×100 (53.58) and Edwards, Tacy, Fletcher and Corley were second in the 4×400 (4:23.17).

Jones turned in a leap of 14-09 to place second in the long jump and Edwards was third in the 200 (27.68).

Elkins is scheduled to travel to Philip Barbour at 4 p.m. for a meet.

B-U is also slated to host a home meet on the same day.
