TENNERTON -- Elkins High opened up the 2023 track and field season with a meet last week at Buckhannon-Upshur High School.
The meet featured Elkins, Buckhannon-Upshur, Phillip Barbour, East Fairmont, Lincoln, Tucker County and Webster County.
The 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams (Elizabeth Jones, Gracelin Corley, Laney Fletcher and Kiley Edwards) captured first for the Lady Tigers.
Edwards was also third in the 400-meter dash and long jump and Jones fourth in the long jump.
B-U won the meet with 200 points. Philip Barbour (102), East Fairmont (86), Lincoln (58), Elkins (51), Tucker County (25) and Webster County (10) rounded out the scoring.
"I was especially pleased with our girls' 4×100 and 4×200 meter relay teams," commented EHS girls coach Scott Biola. "We've been seeing them look quick and competitive at practice and it's nice to see that translate into success on meet day."
Bobby Valentine had the best performance for the Tigers with a third-place finish in the 800-meter run. Josh Bodkins (800), Tyler Burda (3,200) and Gavin Brown (1,600) added fourth-place finishes.
The team of Andres Masten, Burda, Jonathan Dean and Bodkins was third in the 4×800.
B-U won the meet with 182 points, followed by East Fairmont (120), Webster County (76), Philip Barbour (64), Lincoln (47), Elkins (39) and Tucker County (24).
"We have a lot of small wins to celebrate after this meet," EHS boys coach Andrew Carroll said. "We have a young crew of students who are focused on individual improvement, while also supporting each other."
