Fifth-inning surge lifts Colts over Tigers

PHILIPPI -- Philip Barbour plated four runs in the fifth inning to claim a 10-6 win over Elkins Thursday night in Big 10 Conference action.
With the game tied at 6-6, the Colts took the lead for good on Nick Gonzales' run-producing single. Alfred Isch added a three-run blast in the frame.
The Tigers had tied the game in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Gage Huffman and Rylan Wymer's two-run single.
Tyler Sisson and Gonzales laced RBI singles to treat Philip Barbour to a 2-0 advantage in the second.
Elkins answered an inning later with three runs when Cameron Biller doubled in starting pitcher Jaxon Drennen and Lincoln Scott followed with a single to make it 3-2.
A pair of two-out, two-run singles by Mason Halfin and Albert Gonzales allowed the Colts to retake a 6-3 lead in the fourth.
Halfin and Kale Wolfe had three hits each in the win, while Brayden Cole and Halfin each doubled.
Scott had three hits for Elkins and Gavin Carr a double.
Isch earned the win in 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and fanning three.
Halfin went the first 4 1/3 frames, surrendering 11 hits and striking out five.
Biller took the loss, giving up four runs on three hits, and striking out two.
Drennen fanned nine in four innings, scattering six runs on eight hits.
Philip Barbour (9-8) remains home at 5 p.m. Saturday to face Preston.
The Tigers (3-14) will also be in action Saturday at Wayne.
