Elkins and Philip Barbour athletes shine in regional action

WESTON -- The Elkins High School girls relay teams dominated, and Philip Barbour's DaShawn Webster captured two events during the Class AA Region II meet held Friday at Lewis County High School.
Freshman Elizabeth Jones teamed with juniors Gracelin Corley and Laney Fletcher, and senior Kiley Edwards in capturing first in the 4×100 (54.11), 4×200 (1:51.75) and 4×400 (4:19.80) for the Lady Tigers.
Jones also earned a state berth by placing third in the long jump (14-02).
The 4×800 unit of sophomore Mallory Bennett and freshmen Raighan Carte, Mya Mendelson and Delia White also earned an at-large berth with their fourth-place time of 11:27.43.
In the field events, senior Sophia Shoemaker qualified for states by placing second in the discus with a throw of 83-05.
Philip Barbour's Emily Denison captured first in the 400 (1:00.69), while placing third in both the 100 (13.68) and 200 (27.67).
Teammate Preslea Miller claimed the 100 hurdles with an effort of 17.39 and joined Layna Grassi, Payton Holbert and Riley McCartney in finishing third in the 100 relay (54.62). Miller, Grassi, McCartney and Denison were second in the 4×400 (4:22.74) and Grassi, Megan Mitchell, Lily Miller and Kayla Baker placed second in the 4×800 (10:40.79).
The Lady Colts' Kacey Cutright was third in the discus (82-00) and McCartney's fourth-place time of 1:03.94 in the 400 earned her an at-large berth.
Robert C. Byrd won the regional title with 138 points, followed by Philip Barbour (100), Braxton County (99), Liberty (90), Elkins (66), Lincoln (56), Lewis County (54), Roane County (52) and Clay County (27).
The Elkins boys had freshman Josh Bodkins qualify in the 3,200 by placing third in a time of 10:57.15 and the 4×800 relay of Johnathan Dean, Bobby Valentine, Gavin Brown and Robert Masten finished third with an effort of 9:03.68.
Webster won the long jump with a leap of 21-05 and the high jump in an effort of 6-0.
Also placing first for the Colts was Keaton McDermott in the shot put (43-04.25).
Michael Morral was second in the 100 (11.84), John McGee second in the discus (120-07) and third in the shot put (42-05.50) and Patrick Webster's fifth-place finish in the long jump (19-03) earned an at-large state berth.
Roane County claimed the team title with 138 points. Lewis County (113), Lincoln (97), Philip Barbour (92), RCB (83), Clay County (68.50), Elkins (42.50), Liberty (42) and Braxton County (11) rounded out the scoring.
The state meet will be held Friday and Saturday at University of Charleston Stadium at Laidley Field.
