Lady Vikings look for another run at states

PETERSBURG -- Petersburg enters Class A state tournament action with key players back from last year's squad which advanced to the title game.
The Lady Vikings bring a 25-8 mark into the double-elimination tournament slated to get underway Wednesday at Little Creek Park in South Charleston. They will face Greenbrier West (23-2) 30 minutes after the conclusion of the other semifinal contest between St. Marys (28-4) and two-time state champion Wahama (28-5) set to begin at 9:45 a.m.
Pitcher Sammy Colaw and catcher Braylee Corbin lead Petersburg. Both were selected to the all-tournament team in 2022.
The Lady Vikings enter the tourney with some momentum after rallying from a 1-0 series deficit against Doddridge County to capture the Region II crown. After an 8-1 setback, Petersburg bounced back with victories of 7-0 and 9-2 to earn a spot in the state tourney.
Hannah Hamric had a solo homer and drove in three runs for the Lady Vikings in the clinching win over the Lady Bulldogs.
In last year's state tourney, Petersburg finished as runner-ups, falling 4-3 to Wahama in the title game.
In Class AAA, John Marshall (27-4) faces Cabell Midland (21-5) and Jefferson (21-6) battles George Washington (21-11), while the Class AA semifinals feature Oak Glen (25-9) vs. Winfield (30-4) and Herbert Hoover (21-8) faces Independence (24-9).
