Seneca Storm repeat as champs

ELKINS -- The Seneca Soccer U12 boys team repeated as West Virginia Soccer Association Open Cup Champions last weekend

The Seneca Storm successfully defended last year's title by winning all four games in the tournament, including the championship game by a score of 10-1 over Elk River Soccer Club of Kanawha County.

The Storm are coached by Steve Belan and Craig Fortney.

"I can't say enough about this group of kids. They have worked hard for the last couple years and have steadily improved" Belan said. "Their hard work has paid off as demonstrated by winning back-to-back Open Cups, among other tournaments.

"But watching them play is where their excellent play is really evident. They have continued to improve and have done everything we have asked of them."

Belan said the squad's play improved throughout the season and from game-to-game at the Open Cup.

"They were laser-focused and performed extremely well," he said. "They really frustrated some good opponents with their execution and relentless effort. From precision passing to constantly pressuring their opponents to strong shot-making, they were really on their game."

The Storm outscored their opponents by a combined score of 33-2 for the tournament.

"To win games at the Open Cup in such dominating fashion is a testament to their commitment," Belan concluded. "This is a great group of kids and they have truly been a joy to coach."
