BRIDGEPORT -- A three-run sixth inning lifted sixth-seed Fairmont Post 17 to a 4-3 win over No. 3 Elkins Post 29 Monday afternoon in Area 2 tournament play.
The loss sends Post 29 into the loser's bracket, where it will face the loser of Monday's late contest between Buckhannon and Bridgeport at 2:30 p.m. today in an elimination game.
Post 17 struck first in Monday's contest when starting pitcher Nathan Whiteman doubled and scored on Daniel Radish's bloop single to center in the home-half of the opening frame.
Elkins took a 2-1 advantage in the third inning as Cameron Biller singled with one out and Cody Cooper drew a walk.
After Matthew Pratt drew another free pass, Biller race home on a passed ball and Cooper later scored on a wild pitch.
Fairmont drew even in the sixth on Ethan Miller's run-producing single, and then took the lead for good an inning later when Powers Dawson's pop-fly single scored a pair of runs.
Post 29 threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Brock Holland Nick Gonzales singled with two outs.
An error on a hard-hit ball by Biller allowed Holland to score to cut the margin to 4-3.
But a fly out ended the inning.
Whiteman and Miller had two hits apiece, including both doubling, for Fairmont in the win.
Miles Hutzler took the loss, allowing four runs -- two being earned -- on eight hits and striking out six with no walks in going the first 5 2/3 innings.
Kaden Moore finished in relief, allowing no hits and fanning one.
Powers worked the final two innings to earn the win. He gave up one run on three hits.
Whiteman went the first five innings, surrendering two runs on two hits, striking out six and walking seven.
Fairmont later on Monday lost a 14-1 verdict to second-seed Morgantown in five innings.
Fifth-seed Buckhannon Post 7, meanwhile, posted a 7-4 victory over fourth-seed Clarksburg Post 13 in Monday's second game.
Trenton Hunt's two-run double highlighted a four-run fourth inning as Post 7 erased a 3-2 deficit.
Alfred Isch added an RBI sacrifice fly in the inning and a run-producing double in the third.
Hunt finished 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles for Buckhannon.
Seth Gain had two RBIs for Post 13.
Jonah Clem went the first six innings to earn the win, allowing four runs on four hits and fanning six. Zach Calef-Boring finished in relief to garner the save.
