St. Marys -- Freshmen led the way for both the Elkins High School girls and boys cross country teams in their Autumn Classic season opener.
Julia Biola paced the Lady Tigers with an 18th-place finish in a time of 20:34 and Trevor George was at the front of the EHS boys pack with a 21st-place finish in 17:06.
Mallory Bennett also placed in the top 30 for the girls with a 26th-place finish in 21:20.
"The girls came out ready to compete and prove that the work they have done all summer would pay off," said coach Amanda Carter. "They did exactly that. This being the first meet of the season, we know what we need to work on and will do so in the coming weeks."
The EHS girls finished seventh as a team (215 points) and the boys were seventh as well (207 points).
Williamston won the 17-team girls competition with 58 points and Winfield took top honors among the 20 boys teams with 25 points.
Alyssa Sauro captured the girls individual crown in a time of 17:18 and Brayden Marshall won the boys race in a time of 14:56.
"This meet helped us see what is out there beyond our region and the Big 10 Conference," said coach Scott Biola. "We got to run against some truly elite individuals and teams. Honestly … I think it was both a humbling and inspiring experience for all of them."
The Tiger cross country teams return to action Saturday at the Knight Night Relays in Kingwood. The girls race steps off after sundown at 8:30 p.m., with the boys race set to follow at 9:30 p.m.
