Derby accounts for five touchdowns as Valley takes 40-7 win

MILL CREEK -- Gavin Derby accounted for five first-half touchdowns as Valley-Wetzel rolled to a 40-7 win over Tygarts Valley Friday night in season opener for both squads at Bulldog Field.
After receiving the opening kickoff, it took the Lumberjacks just two plays to hit paydirt when Derby completed a 64-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Preat to make it 6-0.
Valley-Wetzel and Derby extended the deficit to 13-0 when Derby intercepted an Austin Gear pass and raced in for a 48-yard score with 8:12 left in the first quarter.
With 2:34 remaining in the opening stanza, the Lumberjacks pushed the lead to 19-0 when Derby capped off a 12-play, 61-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.
Another touchdown run from Derby with 7:33 to play in the second quarter made it 27-0 and the junior signal caller capped off the scoring late in the half when he threw a 27-yard scoring strike to Joseph Barr.
Valley-Wetzel led 33-0 at the break and held a 272 to 43 advantage in total yards through the first two quarters.
After a scoreless third quarter, the visitors extended the lead to 40-0 when Lane Dallison scampered in for a 10-yard touchdown with 10:49 remaining in the contest.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard with 8:25 to play when Cameron Bailey ran in for a 42-yard touchdown to make it 40-7.
Bailey finished the contest with 38 yards rushing and 20 yards receiving to lead the hosts' offensive attack.
Derby rushed for 83 yards on 10 carries and threw for 217 yards on an 11 of 17 passing effort.
Valley-Wetzel will travel to Calhoun County next Friday for its next contest.
Tygarts Valley visits Tucker County the same evening.
