ROANOKE -- For the first time in 29 years, Elkins High School captured a regional banner in golf Monday at Stonewall Resort.

"I've coached some great teams that went to states yet never won regionals," Tigers coach Dave Baird said. "I can't say we played our 'A' game but we gutted out a win."

Baird said he was nervous going into regionals with standout Javier Crespo-Gomez not 100%.

"I got a phone call on Saturday telling me Javier got hurt in the soccer game that day," Baird said. "He wasn't even sure he could go (on Monday). He was in pain yet he knew he had to try his best.

"I was proud of him for fighting the pain and scoring an 81."

The remainder of the Elkins squad includes Lucas D'Angelo, Drew Hinzman and Dylan Hinzman.

As the Class AA Region II champion, the Tigers advance to the state tournament scheduled for Oct. 3-4 at the Speidel Golf Course at Oglebay Park in Wheeling.

Roane County also earned a spot at states as the regional runner-ups.

Starting at /week.
