Gum powers Cee Bees to 40-7 victory over Bulldogs

MILL CREEK -- Maverick Gum rushed for 104 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Clay-Battelle to a 40-7 win over Tygarts Valley Friday night at Bulldog Field.
All of Gum's scores came in the first half as the Cee Bees (1-3) stormed out to a 34-0 lead at intermission.
Clay-Battelle marched 59 yards in seven plays on its opening possession of the game and took a 6-0 lead when Gum powered into the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown at the 9:23 mark.
The Cee Bees extended their lead to 14-0 when Gum capped off an 8-play, 52-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run with 4:07 to play in the opening quarter. Braden Ponceroff ran in the two-point conversion.
Early in the second quarter the visitors went in front 22-0 when Gum scored his final touchdown of the game on a 3-yard scamper. J.C. Spears completed a pass to Josiah Morgan for for the point after.
With 1:24 remaining in the half, Clay-Battelle pushed the deficit to 28-0 when Spears connected with Ponceroff for an 8-yard touchdown.
The Bulldogs (0-5) turned the ball over on their ensuing drive and the Cee Bees struck again with just one second remaining in the half when Spears tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Morgan to make it 34-0.
Tygarts Valley put together a 6-play, 54-yard drive to open the second half as Jaxon Drennen got the hosts on the board with a 4-yard touchdown run, cutting the Cee Bees' lead to 34-7.
Clay-Battelle capped off the scoring in the contest with 7:25 left in regulation when Maddox Shriver scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 40-7. Shriver finished the contest with 106 yards on the ground.
Adam Woods ran for 55 yards to lead the Bulldogs' offense. Drennen followed with 39 yards rushing.
Tygarts Valley will remain home next Friday when it entertains Richwood for a 7 p.m. contest. The Cee Bees visit Hancock (Md.) the same night.
