TENNERTON -- Riel Figueroa has made an immediate impact for the Buckhannon-Uphur High School boys soccer team this season.

As a freshman, Figueroa has netted a team-high 22 goals and assisted on five more, giving him 49 points on the season.

The forward found the back of the net twice in a recent 3-1 win over Philip Barbour and four times earlier this season in a victory against Preston. He also had a hat trick against Lincoln in a 10-0 triumph.

Through Monday, Figueroa is tied or eighth in state in goals scored.

The Bucs are 5-11-3 and 4-4-2 in Big 10 Conference games in playing a tough schedule.

Several of B-U's opponents this season are ranked in the top 10 in the state, including Wheeling Park (first), Morgantown (fifth) and Woodrow Wilson (seventh), along with Class AA-A foes and Big 10 members Farimont Senior (fifth), Lewis County (eighth) and Robert C. Byrd (10th).

The Bucs lost a hard-fought 1-0 decision to the Polar Bears, while battling RCB to a scoreless draw.

B-U is slated to host old rival Elkins at 7:30 p.m. this evening before starting sectional play next week.
