HAMBLETON --Southern (Md.) pulled away in the fourth quarter to hand Class A, No. 3 Tucker County a 56-47 setback on Thursday evening.
The Lady Mountain Lions led 15-4 after one quarter but managed just two free throws and no field goals in the second frame as the Lady Rams, fourth in Maryland's 1A rankings, took a 19-17 lead into the intermission.
Tucker County, however, claimed the third frame, 20-14, behind Raven Matthews' 10 points to lead 37-33 after three quarters.
Southern then connected on 11 of 12 shots from the free-throw line in the final canto to surge ahead for good.
Matthews tossed in 16 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked three shots to lead the Lady Mountain Lions.
Ericka Zirk chipped in 10 points, four caroms and one block, Macy Helmick nine points to go along with five assists and Brylee Wetzel three steals.
Carly Wilt fired in 20 points to lead the Lady Rams. Jayden Weaver also reached double figures with 11.
Tucker County (8-3) is slated to visit Grafton this evening (weather permitting).
The Lady Rams, who also defeated Big 10 Conference teams Elkins and Bridgeport earlier this year, improved to 12-2 and scheduled to visit Allegany (Md.) on Thursday.
