Lady Tigers capture first-ever state title in swimming

MORGANTOWN -- Before each championship heat during the state swim meet, the participants march to the starting blocks, with the look of gladiators preparing for battle as uplifting intro music blares.
The gladiators donning orange & black wardrobe ruled the girls portion of this year's two-day meet held at the Mylan Park Aquatic Center as Elkins captured its first-ever state title with a dominating performance.
At the conclusion of Friday evening's meet, the Lady Tigers accumulated 184.50 points to outdistance runner-up Morgantown's 135 points.
In the process, Elkins captured two relay state titles, capped off by the 400 freestyle unit of freshman Lilly Irons, senior Emily Durst, freshman Lilly Anger and senior Rachel Shryock winning the gold in a time of 3:44.36 in the final girls event of states.
Shryock, Irons and Anger also joined sophomore Emma Uvjagi to win the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:54.61 on Thursday, while freshman Leah Ours, freshman Sophia Hornick, Durst and Ujvagi placed third in the 200 freestyle relay on Friday with an effort of 1:47.13.
Ujvagi, meanwhile, added to the EHS scoring by placing runner-up in the 200 IM in 2:18.62 and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.15).
Irons was second in the 100 freestyle (55.45) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:24.87) and Anger posted a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle -- as she tied Philip Barbour's MacKenna Halfin in a time of 25.41-- and was seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.28).
Halfin also swam to seventh in the 100 freestyle (57.60).
Shryock was second in the 200 freestyle on Thursday and fourth in the 500 freestyle during Friday's action.
Buckhannon-Upshur's Mallory Hughes was eighth in 50 freestyle (26.10) and 11th in the 100 freestyle (58.61).
The Elkins boys also brought home gold as junior Isaac Anger captured the 100 breaststroke on Friday. He also placed second in the 50 freestyle on Thursday.
He also joined seniors Ashten White and Brian Jones and junior Andres Masten in posting an eighth-place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:48.84 and seventh spot in the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.42).
B-U’s Carter Zuliani was fourth in the 50 freestyle (22.41) and seventh in the 100 freestyle (50.46).
The Huntington boys won the team title with 186 points, followed by Bridgeport and Parkersburg South, which tied for second with 163 points.
