Mountain Lions beat Bulldogs, headed to states

HAMBLETON -- Four players landed in double figures as Tucker County claimed a 73-53 win over Tygarts Valley Tuesday night in a Class A, co-Region II final.

The Mountain Lions, ranked first in the state, will be the top seed in next week's state tournament in advancing to Charleston for the fourth straight season under coach Daniel Helmick.

They will face eighth-seed Huntington St. Joseph's at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the quarterfinals inside the Coliseum & Convention Center.

Trevan Bonner and Ethan Rosenau each had 14 points for Tucker County Tuesday night's win, while Owen Knotts added 12 and Maddox Anderson 10.

Tucker County took a 17-10 lead after the first quarter and led by a 42-17 advantage after outscoring the Bulldogs, 25-7, in the decisive second frame.

Tygarts Valley continued to battle, however, being outscored just 17-15 in the third and 19-16 in the final frame.

Jacob Wamsley had 19 points and Kaden Moore 10 for the Bulldogs, who finished the season 10-12 and lose Ethan McGee, Malachi Somers and Carter Patterson to graduation.
