Mountain Lions hold off Cougars to win sectional title

KEYSER -- Top-seed Tucker County held off a late charge from second-seed East Hardy to capture the Class A, Region II, Section 1 title, 49-43, Thursday night at Keyser High School.

The Mountain Lions, last year's state runner-ups and ranked first in the state, will now host the loser of tonight's section 2 championship game between Tygarts Valley at Pendleton County next week in a co-regional final.

The Cougars will visit the winner in the other co-regional final.

Tucker County led 16-11 after one quarter on Thursday night and carried a 33-19 advantage into the intermission.

But East Hardy went on a run midway through the third frame to cut the margin to 35-30.

The Mountain Lions led by seven, at 40-33, entering the final quarter.

East Hardy got within two in the fourth but Tucker County outscored the Cougars 7-5 over the final 2 minutes of regulation.

In other action on Thursday night, fourth-seed Lincoln knocked off second-seed Robert C. Byrd, 48-42, in the Class AAA, Region II, Section 2 title game.

The Cougars will now host the loser of tonight's section 1 title game between East Fairmont at Fairmont Senior next week in co-regional play, while the Flying Eagles visit the winner.
