CHARLESTON -- Athletes from Philip Barbour are set to begin action today in the Class AA portion of the high school state track and field meet being held at Laidley Field.
Ben Tenney leads the Tigers into the two-day event after earning high-point honors in the Region II meet to help lead Elkins to the team title.
Tenney was first in the 800-meter run (2:06.01), the 1,600 (4:43.88) and the 3,200 (10:00.67) at regionals.
Tenney will also join Josh Bodkins, Bobby Valentine and Gavin Brown in in the 4×800 relay.
The unit won the regional title in a time of 8:48.07.
Three other Tiger relay teams will also compete at states.
The 4×100 unit comprised of J.J. Cepeda, Nick Bowers, Caleb Ray and Marcus Franklin, the shuttle hurdle relay squad of Andres Masten, Jayden Harding, Logan Rowan and Cepeda and the 4×400 relay of Masten, Bodkins, Brown and Johnathan Dean.
George is also qualified in three individual events -- the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.
Ray, meanwhile,will compete in both the 100 and 200.
Other EHS state qualifiers include Ben Carbaugh in the discus, Brown in the 3,200, Dean in the 800 and Bodkins in the 1,600.
Philip Barbour will be led by Nate Hulver, who captured the regional title in both the 200 (22.98) and 400 (51.14).
Drew Morral was also first at regionals in the 100 in a time of 11.37.
Hulver and Morral will team with Patrick Webster and Isaiah Starks in the 4×400 relay, and join Kevin Knotts and Cam Bennett in in the 4×100 relay.
The Colts' Keaton "Beef" McDermott won the regional title in the shot put (48-02) and placed second in the discus (137-08).
John McGee will compete in the shot put, Nick Tustin in the shot put and Webster in the high jump.
In the girls meet, Elkins' Emilia Tenney enters states after being the regional champion in the 800 (2:30.36) and the 1,600 (5:45.02.
The freshman will also join Julia Biola, Emma Gilbert and Ziah George in the 4×400-meter relay.
Biola, Tenney, Delia White and Mallory Bennett are entered in the 4×800 relay.
Other individual qualifiers for Elkins include Biola in the 800 and 1,600 and Elizabeth Jones in the long jump.
Philip Barbour's Preslea Miller was the regional champ in the long jump with a leap of 14-07.
Lily Miller will compete in both the 1,600 and 3,200 and Payton Holbert in the 200.
Kayla Baker qualified for the 3,200 and will team with Lily Miller, Brooklyn Chappell and Phaedra Payne in the 4×800 relay.
Kacey Cutright is entered in the discus.
The state meet gets underway today and concludes on Saturday evening.
Field events and relays begin at 2 p.m. today and action gets underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
