EHS boys win title as several area athletes earn state berths

WESTON — Elkins High School’s Ben Tenney won three events during the Class AA, Region II track and field meet held Thursday at Lewis County High School.
Tenney was first in the 800-meter run (2:06.01), the 1,600 (4:43.88) and the 3,200 (10:00.67) as the Tigers claimed the team title.
Tenney, who earned high-point honors in the meet with 32.5 points, also joined Josh Bodkins, Bobby Valentine and Gavin Brown in capturing first in the 4×800 relay with a time of 8:48.07.
Elkins also qualified three other relay teams for states.
The 4×100 unit comprised of J.J. Cepeda, Nick Bowers, Caleb Ray and Marcus Franklin finished second in a time of 46.43; the shuttle hurdle relay squad of Andres Masten, Jayden Harding, Logan Rowan and Cepeda was third (1:08.21); and the 4×400 relay of Masten, Bodkins, Brown and Johnathan Dean was third (3:42.87).

George qualified for states in three individual events — the 800 (fourth, 2:08.98), 1,600 (second, 4:45.47) and 3,200 (second, 10:04.94).
Ray, meanwhile, earned state spots in both the 100 (11.57) and 200 (23.69) with third-place finishes
Other EHS state qualifiers included Ben Carbaugh in the discus (third, 117-9), Brown in the 3,200 (fourth, 10:17), Dean in the 800 (second, 2:08) and Bodkins in the 1,600 (third, 4:53).
“Tonight we saw the type of performances we have trained for all season,” EHS boys coach Shane Richardson said. “States was the aim from day one and 22 of our athletes achieved that goal.”
The Tigers accumulated 132.5 points, with Philip Barbour placing second with 114.
Lewis County (108), Roane County (98), Lincoln (98), Clay County (57.5), Robert C. Byrd (41), Liberty (39) and Braxton County (10) rounded out the field.
Philip Barbour was led by Nate Hulver, who captured the regional title in both the 200 (22.98) and 400 (51.14).
Drew Morral claimed first in the 100 in a time of 11.37.
Hulver and Morral also teamed with Patrick Webster and Isaiah Starks in winning the 4×400 relay in a time of 3:35.33, and joined Kevin Knotts and Cam Bennett in earning a state spot with a third-place finish in the 4×100 relay (46.46).
The Colts’ Keaton “Beef” McDermott won the regional title in the shot put (48-02) and placed second in the discus (137-08).
Teammate John McGee won the discus (145-09) and qualified for states in the shot put with a toss of 42-11 to earn an at-large berth.
Nick Tustin qualified in the shot put (44-03, while Webster placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5-06 to earn a state spot.
Emilia Tenney led the Lady Tigers by taking the 800 (2:30.36) and the 1,600 (5:45.02.
Tenney also joined Julia Biola, Emma Gilbert and Ziah George in placing second in the 4×400 (4:27.46), with Biola, Tenney, Delia White and Mallory Bennett finishing as runner-ups in the 4×800 in 10:42.26).
Other individual qualifiers for Elkins included Biola in the 800 (third, 2:39) and 1,600 (third, 5:53), Elizabeth Jones in the long jump (third, 13-11.75) and Katherine Hinchman in the discus (second, 89-11).
Lewis County took the team title with 125 points, followed by Braxton County (95), Elkins (88), RCB (79), Philip Barbour (78), Liberty (77), Roane County (70), Lincoln (53) and Clay County (15).
Philip Barbour’s Preslea Miller turned in a jump of 14-07 to win the long jump title, while Lily Miller was second in both the 1,600 (5:53.44) and 3,200 (12:41) and Payton Holbert second in the 200 (27.81).
Kayla Baker was third in 3,200 (12:58.47) and joined Lily Miller, Brooklyn Chappell and Phaedra Payne in qualifying for states by finishing third in the 4×800 relay (11:22.47).
Kacey Cutright earned a state berth in the discus with a toss of 86-07 in placing third.
The state meet takes place May 17-18 at Charleston’s Laidley Field.
