Post 29 falls to Post 60 in Wood Bat Classic

MORGANTOWN -- Elkins Post 29 dropped a 5-1 decision to the Post 60 (Berkeley Springs) Knights Friday evening in the WAJR Wood Bat Classic at Dale Miller Field at Mylan Park.

The Knights struck for single runs in each of the first and second innings before Post 29 answered in the top of the third inning when Jacob Wamsley led off with a single and moved to second on Matthew Pratt's sacrifice bunt.

After a fly out, Lincoln Scott singled to left to score Wamsley.

But Post 60 responded with three runs in the home-half of the frame on a run-producing single by Mason Everhart, an RBI sacrifice fly from Mason Carter and an error to make it 5-1.

Miles Hutzler was tagged with the loss, going the first 2 1/3 inning and allowing five runs on seven hits, striking out one and walking two.

Wamsley closed in relief, not allowing a hit, fanning one and walking one.

Landon Pence went the first two innings to earn the win. He gave up two hits and struck out five.

Brandon Montgomery, Bryan French and Kyle Moore finished in relief.

French had four strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings of work, while Moore had a pair and Montgomery one.

Wamsley had three hits to lead Elkins at the plate.

Ein Wolfe had a pair of safeties for the Knights, who face Moundsville Post 3 and Parkersburg Post 15 today.

Elkins battles Potomac Valley Post 64 at 9 a.m. today and Charleston Post 65 at 11:30 a.m. at Shilling Field.

Other Senior Legion squads competing in the event include Morgantown Post 2 and Berkeley Post 14,

Play concludes with Sunday's championship set to get underway at 4:30 p.m.

The Junior Legion bracket includes Berkeley Post 14, Kingwood Post 56, Morgantown Post 2 and Wheeling Post 1.
