Post 13 edges Post 29 in a pitchers’ duel

Unearned run the difference as Elkins falls, 1-0

By Joey Kittle 2 min read

BUCKHANNON -- Elkins Post 29's Ethan Humphrey and Clarksburg Post 13's Dominick Bombardiere were on top of their respective pitching games Wednesday afternoon at Hank Ellis Field on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Humphrey gave up four hits and Bombardiere just three, and the duo limited their free passes.

The difference, however, came in the bottom of the fourth inning as fourth-seed Post 13 picked up an unearned run to hold on for a 1-0 win in the opening game of the American Legion Area 2 Tournament.

Fifth-seed Elkins will now attempt to stay alive in the tourney when it meets third-seed and host squad Buckhannon Post 7 at 1 p.m. today in an elimination game.

Post 7 dropped an 8-6 verdict to second-seed Bridgeport in Wednesday's second tourney game.

Vincent Oloi singled with one out in the fourth for Clarksburg and moved to second when Aiden Eddy reached first base on a sacrifice bunt.

Then on a double steal, a throwing error allowed Oloi to race home with the game's lone run.

Another Post 29 miscue kept the inning alive, but Humphrey recorded a strikeout to advert anymore damage in the frame.

Elkins' Owen Stanley singled with one out in the fifth, before Bomnardiere got a strikeout and fly out to end the inning.

Post 29 threatened again when Lincoln Scott, who was 2 for 3 on the day, led off the seventh with a sharp single to center.

He then advanced to second on Gage Huffman's sacrifice bunt.

After a strikeout, Stanley was intentionally walked and Bombardiere fanned the final batter to end the game.

Bombardiere finished with six strikeouts and two walks on the day.

Humphrey fanned four and issued just one free pass.

Clarksburg faced top-seed Morgantown on Wednesday night.
