EHS girls, boys take Frankfort invite

RIDGELEY-- Paced by second-place individual finishes from Emilia Tenney (20:02) and Trevor George (16:48), Elkins High School's girls and boys cross country teams both captured victories at Saturday's Frankfort Invitational.
In the girls race, Elkins' Julia Biola (eighth, 21:18) joined Tenney in earning medals via Top 15 finishes amongst a field of 79 runners. Other scorers for the Lady Tigers included Mallory Bennett (19th, 23:31), Mya Mendelson (21st, 24:07), and Delia White (31st, 24:54).
"Both the girls and boys teams came prepared for a tough competition against the defending state runner-up teams," said EHS girls coach Amanda Carter. "This was a great win for the Tigers!"
With regard to Carter's point, Frankfort's girls finished as the 2023 AA state runner-up to Branxton County and Frankfort's boys team was the runner-up to Winfield.
In capturing the win on Saturday, the Elkins girls (66 points) outdistanced Frankfort (73) along with Washington (80), Keyser (107), Mountain Ridge (113), Mercersburg Academy (134), Fort Hill (140), Berkeley Springs (153) and Tucker County (230).
Individually, Mercersburg's Gabriella Cechini set a new girls course record en route to her victory in 19:26.
On the boys side, Elkins' George finished seven seconds behind Frankfort's Ryan Hughes' winning effort of 16:41.
In addition to George, four other Tigers earned individual medals in the varsity boys race by finishing among the Top 15 out of 92 runners. These EHS medal winners included Josh Bodkins (fourth, 16:55), Ben Tenney (fifth, 17:07) and Gavin Brown (sixth, 17:19).
Preston Nixon (25th, 19:08) rounded out the Tiger scoring at 42 points with the pivotal fifth position.
Trailing Elkins in boys team scoring were Frankfort (59 points), Mercersburg Academy (121), Keyser (148), Mountain Ridge (156), Hampshire (170), Washington (196), Hedgesville (200), Tucker County (201), Allegany (201), Berkeley Springs (247) and Paw Paw (277).
"We made this trip because Frankfort is a perennial coed powerhouse," said EHS boys coach Scott Biola. "To beat both their girls and boys teams says a lot about the hard work our kids have put in."
Elkins' Logan Jones (third, 21:20) and Aaron Knight (sixth, 22:06) also earned medals by finishing in the top ten in the junior varsity race.
The EHS cross country teams will travel to Leesburg, Virginia, this Saturday to compete in the Oatlands Invitational against over 100 teams from Virginia, Colorado, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New York and Washington, D.C.
