UC edges Senators in MEC battle

ELKINS -- In a battle of nationally-ranked Mountain East Conference teams, No. 6 the University Charleston scored a late goal to defeat No. 20 Davis & Elkins Wednesday at Nuttall Field.

The Golden Eagles (4-0-1, 4-0-0 MEC) tallied the game's lone goal in the 82nd minute off the foot of Jack Kay, with Jose Suarez Monaco providing the assist.

The Senators (3-1-1, 1-1-1) managed just five shots -- one on goal --in the defensive battle of two of the top team's in the MEC.

UC had eight shots, six being on goal, and held a 15-3 edge in corner kicks.

A total of 31 fouls were whistled in the contest, 14 for the Golden Eagles and 17 on D&E.

Hugo Fauli had the shot on goal for the Senators. Dante Ordones had five saves in net.

Nicolai Gundersen had one stop in goal for Charleston.

D&E remains home at 2 p.m. Sunday to battle Frostburg State for another league match.

The Golden Eagles return to the pitch at 11 a.m. Saturday at home against No. 12 Saginaw Valley State.
