B-U defense showed some grit in loss to Senior

Bucs record pair of sacks, interception against Polar Bears

TENNERTON -- Even though first-year Buckhannon-Upshur coach Sloan Baisden's squad took a 55-0 loss to Class AAA, top-ranked Fairmont Senior on Friday night, the Bucs showed plenty of grit on the defensive side.

B-U became the first defense this season to record an interception against Polar Bear all-state first-team quarterback Brody Whitehair, who was also sacked by Colton Wendling and Haiden Tenney.

Whitehair became Senior's all-time passing leader in the victory.

Wendling forced the ball out of Whitehair's hands with his jarring first-half sack and resulted in a 20-plus yard loss after the ball was recovered by Fairmont Senior.

Aidan Squires recorded the interception for the Bucs, who are 0-6 on the season.

B-U's schedule has been filled with teams in the playoff chase or front-runners to win the title, including Fairmont Senior and Bridgeport who were rated first and second respectively in last week's SSAC ratings.

Other opponents the Bucs have faced include Class AAAA, No. 5 Morgantown and No. 14 University, Class AAA, No. 8 Elkins and Class AA, No. 8 Philip Barbour.

B-U returns to action Friday night at Lewis County.

WEEK 7 SLATE: Other games on tap for this Friday night in Week 7 of the high school football season include Elkins at North Marion, Pendleton County at Tygarts Valley Moorefield at Tucker County, Pocahontas County at Wirt County and Hampshire at East Hardy.

Philip Barbour is idle this week and returns to action Oct. 18 at Robert C. Byrd.

Petersburg is also in its bye week and will entertain Greenbrier West on Oct. 18.
