EHS boys capture Big 10 Conference title

BRIDGEPORT — On a clear and sunny day at The Bridge Sports Complex, Trevor George and the Elkins High School boys cross country team made it clear for the second straight year that the Tigers are the best team in the Big 10 Conference.

George’s 16:43 was good enough to hold off teammate Josh Bodkins, who finished second in 16:59.

George was named the Big 10 Runner of the Year.

Gavin Brown also earned first-team All-Big 10 recognition with a fourth-place finish in 17:08. Treven Schaefer (23rd, 18:36) and Bobby Valentine (31st, 19:26) rounded out the top five scoring positions for EHS.

As for team scores, Elkins’ 61 points outpaced Grafton’s 72 to take the conference crown. Other complete teams included Bridgeport (75), Preston (147), Liberty (147), East Fairmont (157), Fairmont Senior (162), Buckhannon-Upshur (185), Lewis County (188), Lincoln (227), North Marion (311), Robert C. Byrd (334) and Philip Barbour (345).

Shreve

“We had several things happen that were out of the ordinary today,” said EHS boys coach Scott Biola. “That said, we had some kids step up when we needed them and we were fortunate enough to beat a very good Grafton team.”

On the girls side, Buckhannon-Upshur’s Samantha Shreve took top individual honors in 19:11. Elkins’ Emilia Tenney also earned first-team All-Big-10 recognition with a second- place finish in 19:38.

Other scorers for the EHS girls included Mallory Bennett (28th, 24:25), Mya Mendelson (30th, 24:28), Emma Gilbert (39th, 25:36) and Delia White (49th, 26:59).

Preston’s girls were the Big 10 Conference team champions with 33 points to easily outpace runner-up Bridgeport’s 75. Other complete teams in the girls race included Buckhannon-Upshur (90), East Fairmont (106), Grafton (110), Elkins (115), and North Marion (181).

“The girls were battling some sickness today, but several ladies stepped up and we were grateful for that,” said EHS coach Amanda Carter. “We will now focus on regionals this upcoming week.”

Tenney

Elkins will host the Class AA Region I Championships Thursday at Davis & Elkins College. The girls race starts at 11 a.m.. and the boys step off at 11:45 a.m.
