CLARKSBURG -- A goal-line stand as time expired lifted Class AA, No. 4 Philip Barbour to a 19-12 win over Class AAA, No. 12 Robert C. Byrd on Friday night.
The Colts (5-2) led 19-6 before the Flying Eagles cut the lead to seven when Latrell Jones busted loose for a 58-yard score with 4 minutes left to play in regulation.
After the Colts missed a 38-yard field goal with 2 minutes to go, RCB reached the PB 9-yard line when Issac Barksdale hauled in a tipped-ball on a long pass from quarterback Junior Smith with a minute to play.
But the Colts stopped Smith on a fourth-and-goal from the 1 as time expired.
Trailing 6-0, quarterback Braylyn Edwards put Philip Barbour in front, 7-6, on a 3-yard run with 7 minutes left in the second quarter.
A Tyler Vance 9-yard scamper with 3:20 remaining in the first half treated the Colts to a 13-7 halftime lead.
On Philip Barbour's initial drive of the second half, Cam Bennett made it 19-6 when he took a short pass from Edwards and found the end zone from 12 yards out.
Bennett led the Colts with 89 yards rushing om seven totes and in receiving with five snags for 41 yards.
Edwards was 7 of 9 passing for 57 yards, while Mason Jones picked up 82 yards rushing on 23 totes.
Jones led the Flying Eagles with 106 yards rushing. He also had a 37-yard TD run in the first quarter.
Philip Barbour returns home next Friday to face Lewis County. RCB is now 3-5 and visits North Marion on the same evening.
