Patriots erase early deficit to defeat Colts

PARSONS — Garrett Wilfong found the end zone three times and Tucker County’s defense recorded a second straight shutout in the postseason in a 50-0 win over PVC rival Pendleton County Saturday at R.H. Armstrong Memorial Field at Class of 1984 Alumni Stadium.

The second-seeded Mountain Lions (12-0) will now host No. 3 Wahama at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Class A semifinals.

Wilfong scored on 9 and 26-yard TD pass from Sam Marks, while returning a punt 55 yards for another score.

Jared Reall piled up 190 yards on the ground and added a 25-yard score.

Marks was 13 of 15 through the air for 191 yards. He also had a 3-yard TD run.

Independence 49, PB 17

COAL CITY — No. 3 Independence erased a 10-0 deficit to claim a 49-17 win over sixth-seed Philip Barbour Saturday in Class AA quarterfinal action.

The Colts ended the season with an 8-4 record.

A 21-yard field goal by Ahmi Shipley and a 14-yard pass from Robbie Jones to Cam Bennett treated Philip Barbour to a 10-0 first-quarter lead.

But the Patriots took over from that juncture behind the running of Sylas Nelson, who finished with 181 yards and three touchdowns on the night.

The Colts trailed 21-10 at halftime and 35-10 in the third quarter before Jones connected with Bennett from 13 yards out to cut the lead to 18.

Independence tacked on two more touchdowns to set the final score.

Tyler Vance had 65 yards rushing and Logan Beam added 40 in the loss.

The Patriots (12-0) visit No. 2 Roane County Friday in the semifinals.

Top-seed Frankfort entertains Williamstown in the other semifinal on Friday evening.
