Girls regional pairings revealed

ELKINS — The seedings for the upcoming high school girls basketball regional tournaments were released on Thursday afternoon.

Last spring, the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission Board of Directors approved a change in the preliminary rounds of the boys and girls basketball in postseason action, getting rid of sectional tournaments.

The new format combined the two previous sections in each region into a regional tournament, with two teams moving on to the state tournament in Charleston.

Elkins is seeded third in Class AAA, Region 1 action and entertains No. 6 Fairmont Senior on Friday, Feb. 28.

No. 5 North Marion visits No. 4 Weir and No. 2 East Fairmont hosts No. 7 Brooke in the other opening matchups.

Top-seed Grafton earned the bye

In the Class AAAA, Region 1 tourney, Buckhannon-Upshur is the fifth seed and visits No. 4 John Marshall on Friday, Feb. 28.

Top-seed Morgantown and No. 2 University drew byes, with No. 3 Wheeling Park hosting No. 6 Preston in the other regional opener.

Philip Barbour, meanwhile, is the top seed in the Class AA, Region II tourney and will host No. 8 Liberty on Friday, Feb. 28, while No. 4 Petersburg entertains No. 5 Moorefield, No. 2 Ritchie County hosts No. 7 South Harrison and No. 6 Braxton County travels to No. 3 Doddridge County.

In the Class A, Region II tournament, Tucker County is the top seed and hosts No. 8 Harman on Friday, Feb. 28, while fifth-seed Tygarts Valley visits No. 4 East Hardy, No. 2 Pendleton County entertains No. 7 Paw Paw and third-seed Pocahontas County hosts No. 6 Union.

The two title games in each region will be held March 4-6.
