Three Tigers qualify for states

Twigg wins regional title; PB’s Morris, Cross secure spots in Huntington

ELKINS -- Three Elkins High School wrestlers qualified for states during the Class AA/A, Region II tournament held over the weekend at Braxton County High School.

Sophomore Tucker Twigg, competing in the 138-pound weight class, became just the third Tiger to win a regional title over the past 17 years.

Twigg (29-7) earned an 11-6 decision over Robert C. Byrd's Julion Lownsberry in the title match. He had collected a pin fall against Doddridge County's Tristan Swiger in the semifinals.

Both Lownsberry and Swiger are ranked among the top seven in the state.

Sophomore Chiron Wing secured a spot in states by placing third at 175, taking pin fall wins against Moorefield's Caleb Flinn and East Hardy's Ryan Harmon in his final two matches.

Freshman Isaac Workman qualified at 215 by placing fourth. Workman overcame a 10-1 deficit against Moorefield's Dylan Ault by winning by pin fall in the final seconds en route to earning a state berth.

Junior Logan Stewart, meanwhile, just missed qualifying for states by placing fifth at 157, while freshman Anthony Isabell (150) went 1-2 in the tourney, earning a pin fall against Doddridge County's Okey Starsick.

Despite only having five wrestlers competing at regionals, Elkins placed ninth out of 18 teams with 82 points.

The 82 points accumulated by the Tigers were their most in regional competition in the last 19 years.

Braxton County won the title with 207 points.

Philip Barbour senior Ryan Morris (126) and junior Malachi Cross (285) also qualified for states by placing third in their respective classes.

The state tournament takes place March 6-8 at the Huntington Civic Center.
