CHARLESTON — Elkins High School’s Maddie Belan has earned a spot on the second unit of the 50th annual West Virginia Sports Writers Association all-state team.

Belan averaged 20.3 points per game, 6.9 rebounds and 3.5 steals this past season in helping lead the Lady Tigers to a spot in the regional finals.

She went over 1,000 points for her career this season and turned in five double-doubles.

Junior teammate Emma Gilbert was listed as honorable mention.

Nitro senior Natalie Smith was named captain of the first team.

The 6-foot forward averaged 14.9 points, 8.7 rebounds, three assists, 1.6 steals and 1.4 blocks per game this season.

Three schools had multiple first-teamers, one of which was state champion Wayne. Brooke Adkins and Jayce Sammons represent the Pioneers.

Sissonville’s Kynna Britton, like Adkins, is a member of the first team for the third consecutive season.

Britton has committed to play at West Virginia Wesleyan.

Greenbrier East and Grafton also placed two players on the first team. The Spartans saw Kennedy Stewart and Ava Workman do so, while the Bearcats got Kenna Keener and Hadley Horne on the list.

Keyser’s Bibs Felton and East Fairmont’s Kailee Hammond are the other members of the first team.

Wayne’s Addie Adkins joined her sister, Brooke, on the all-state team, as the captain of the second team.

Wooden plaques in the shape of West Virginia that include the player’s name, school, licensed WVSWA logo and year of the honoree are available to all-state first-team, second-team and honorable-mention selections and can be purchased from the Bear Wood Co. through WVSWA.org or Bearwoodcompany.com.
