Philip Barbour, Tucker girls advance to states
PHILIPPI — Philip Barbour and Tucker County secured spots in the girls state tournament with wins on Wednesday night.
The top-seeded Lady Colts (14-8) advanced to the state tournament for the fourth straight season with a 53-37 win over No. 4 Petersburg in one of the Class AA, Region II finals.
Ritchie County defeated Doddridge County, 49-28, in the other regional final to move on to states as well.
Izzy Knotts tossed in 22 points to lead Philip Barbour, which led 26-9 at halftime.
Miley Tingler had 10 points for the Lady Vikings, who ended the season 11-12.
The Lady Colts are the eighth seed in the state tourney, battling top-seed Wheeling Central at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in quarterfinal action at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.
The other Class AA quarterfinal pairings include No. 2 St. Marys vs. No. 7 Ritchie County, No. 4 Wyoming East vs. No. 5 James Monroe and No. 2 Charleston Catholic vs. No. 6 Logan.
In one of the Class A, Region II finals, the top-seeded Lady Mountain Lions (16-6) are headed to states for the unprecedented 21st straight season after cruising past No. 4 East Hardy, 59-30, as Raven Matthews scored 22 points and Mayha Gross added 12.
Senior Brooklyn Tinnell led the Lady Cougars with 12, followed by classmate Brooklyn Miller with 11.
East Hardy finished with a 10-12 mark.
Tucker County is the third seed in the state tournament and will face No. 6 Greenbrier West at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
The other quarterfinal matchups include No. 5 Pendleton County vs. No. 4 Cameron, No. 1 Gilmer County vs. No. 8 Notre Dame and No. 2 Tug Valley vs. No. 7 Webster County.
