Tigers drop contests to Grafton, Brooke

GRAFTON -- The Elkins High School baseball team dropped a pair of games against Grafton and Brooke on Saturday.

The Tigers (1-2) lost to Big 10 Conference foe Grafton, 7-4, in their first game, and later fell to the Bruins, 19-5.

Blayne Thompson and Owen Stanley had two RBIs each for Elkins against the Bearcats.

Isaac Shepler added a pair of hits.

Stanley had two hits and an RBI in the loss to Brooke in the second game. Brayden Biller collected two RBIs.

The Tigers travel to Fairmont Senior today.

Calhoun County 3

MOUNT ZION -- The Elkins High School softball team picked up a 14-3 win over Calhoun County on Saturday.

Hailey Riffle and Gabby Mahanes each homered for the Lady Tigers, who improved to 2-0 on the young season.

Maddie Lambert allowed three runs on six hits in going all four innings to earn the win.

Elkins is slated to visit Fairmont Senior this evening.

Lady Colts split games

GLENVILLE -- Philip Barbour split a pair of games on Saturday, cruising past Braxton County and dropping a 2-0 decision to Wheeling Central.

Avery McDaniel twirled a five-inning two-hitter against Braxton County, striking out 11.

The Lady Colts struck for five runs in the second inning, with Jhenna Hicks, McDaniel and Olivia Wilmoth cracking RBI doubles. Payton McDaniel and Leann Moss added RBIs.

Payton Holbert also drove in two runs on the day.

In the loss to Central, Avery McDaniel and Olivia Kiaski were locked into a pitchers' duel.

McDaniel allowed just three hits and both runs were unearned. She struck out five and walked one.

Kiaski surrendered five hits, striking out 10 and walking four.

The Lady Maroon Knights scored single runs in each of the fourth and fifth frames.

Philip Barbour (2-1) hosts Buckhannon-Upshur at 6 p.m. today.
