Bulldogs edge Wildcats in classic pitching efforts

Jaxon Drennen goes 7-plus hitless innings, strikes out 16 to outduel Chase Owens in 1-0 walk-off win in 10 innings

MILL CREEK -- For the second straight night, Tygarts Valley found itself in the midst of a low-scoring pitchers' duel that came down to the final innings on Wednesday night.

But after seeing Petersburg plate two runs in the seventh inning for a 2-0 win on Tuesday, the Bulldogs were the other end in a 1-0 walk-off win over regional foe Pendleton County.

Jaxon Drennen turned in a memorable effort on the mound against the Wildcats.

The Potomac State signee went 7 1/3 hitless innings, striking out 16 and walking four.

Chase Owens was just effective, giving up just two hits, fanning nine and walking three.

The game, however, came down to the 10th inning.

Kendall Armstrong led off with a single and Drennen cracked a double to right.

After Adam Woods was intentionally walked, Pendleton County turned a double play but Drennen raced around from second base to score the winning run.

The teams had scoring opportunities in extra frames but key defensive plays and timely strikeouts from both sides kept the game scoreless.

Kaden Moore finished in relief for Tygarts Valley, going 2 2/3 innings, giving up just one hit, striking out four and walking one.

Travis Owens went the final 2 2/3 frames in taking the loss. He gave up four hits, struck out one and walked two.

Along with his performance on the hill, Drennen finished 4 for 5 with four doubles.

Caleb Armentrout had the lone hit for the Wildcats.

Ian Harris, who was hard-luck losing pitcher on Tuesday, and Armstrong had the other hits for the Bulldogs, who are now 8-5 and will host Notre Dame at noon Saturday for a doubleheader.

Pendleton County (6-8) hosts Elkins at 6 p.m. Friday.
